Ana opens her small clothing alteration shop every morning. She irons her apron, cleans the window, and lights the vanilla scented candle. Everything is perfect, but her door faces an alley. People walk by, far away, on the brightly lit avenue at the corner. That day she notes in her notebook: “Three glances, no one came in.”
Are you experiencing something similar with your website? Is it open, beautiful, but hardly anyone visits it?
One afternoon, Carmen, a loyal customer, comes in. She looks around the shop with affection and says: “You don’t need to shout louder. You need to be where people can see you and have your window display speak clearly. That’s called SEO (Search Engine Optimization) on the internet.”
Ana frowns: “And what is that?”
“Moving from this alley to the main street of search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.; putting up a clear sign and tidying up the interior so that anyone passing by instantly understands what you do,” Carmen replies.
Together, they decide to make three simple changes to follow that idea:
The store sign changes from reading “Welcome” to “Clothing alterations and quick sewing in the neighborhood”.
In the shop window they display some examples of specific services with prices: “Hemming trousers — 24h”, “Zippers — 48h”.
Carmen and another neighbor later leave notes on the market’s notice board and write in their WhatsApp groups: “Ana is punctual and leaves the clothes perfect.”
A few days later, someone comes in smiling: “I searched on my mobile for ‘clothing alterations nearby’… and you came up in the results.”
