About Course

Before proceeding with this course, it is recommended to complete the Introduction to the XRP Ledger Course to lay the groundwork for the advanced concepts discussed here.

The XRP Ledger is, like many other blockchain networks, an ever-evolving technology.

Developers who are actively involved in bringing additional functionality to the XRP Ledger to increase its use case and utility play a critical role in helping develop the code. Discussions around amendment proposals are therefore commonplace on social media and leave many wondering what they are, how they are decided on and what the implications of these changes will have.

This short course aims to bridge the knowledge gap between those that know and those that don’t, by explaining how major changes to the underlying code the network operates on are agreed upon. This includes how amendments are proposed and discussed, drafted, peer-reviewed, tested and finally voted on before going live.

  • Comprehend the Amendment process

Course Content

The Innovation of the Consensus Protocol
At the heart of the XRP Ledger is a different approach to validating transactions: the consensus protocol. Unlike the energy-intensive Proof-of-Work (PoW) and mining used by Bitcoin, or the Proof-of-Stake algorithm, the XRP Ledger achieves agreement on transactions through a network of validators. This process is not only faster but also far more energy-efficient.

Open-Source Evolution: rippled’s Role in the XRPL
At the core of the XRP Ledger infrastructure is "rippled". This is the server software that powers the XRP Ledger.

The Amendment Process
As detailed in the previous lessons, the XRP Ledger relies heavily on the participation of the validator nodes that are critical in ensuring the accuracy of the data that is recorded in each ledger entry.
