ISO20022 and Cryptocurrencies
About Course
When money moves across borders, banks aren’t sending coins, they are sending messages. This short course explains ISO 20022 as the new global “language” for those financial messages in clear, everyday terms. Learners will come to understand why payment systems are migrating from older messaging formats, how richer, structured data reduces friction, and what this upgrade means for speed, automation, and compliance.
Using a practical payment walk-through, the course compares a legacy MT103 message with its ISO 20022 equivalent so learners can see the difference: from cramped text fields to clean, structured XML-style data. It highlights where better data improves sanctions screening, invoice matching, and straight-through processing, and why banks care about this far more than any meme about “magic compliant coins.”
The course then tackles one of the noisiest topics online: “ISO 20022 coins.” It separates standards from speculation, explaining what ISO itself says about cryptocurrencies, why assets and message formats are different layers, and how crypto can appear inside ISO 20022 messages without becoming an “ISO product.” Learners are introduced to Digital Token Identifiers (ISO 24165), MiCA’s emerging use of DTIs in Europe, and how real companies like Ripple integrate with ISO 20022 at the messaging layer rather than turning XRP into a special category of coin.
Throughout, the course encourages critical thinking. Learners get a simple checklist for evaluating social media claims, understand how to spot when ISO 20022 is being used as hype, and finish with a grounded view of what this migration genuinely means for crypto holders and for the future of regulated digital assets.

The formats are published, so learners can actually see ISO message for security and how the ISO 24165 appears in the message.
Having real world experiences integrating finance systems/ERPs/reconciliation tools with banks, PSPs other financial entities, I started out with a decent knowledge base. This course was informative in how blockchain tokens can integrate with banking and financial flows using ISO20022 and ISO24156 messaging standards. I also appreciate how the course emphasizes the very important point that tokens are not "ISO certified" (there is no such thing!) and addresses much of the uninformed hype around tokens, such as XRP, we see in much of social media.
