Hosted by Hayley and Duncan, and guest speakers Gorkenheimer, Martin Yearley and JPG Prince came together to share their insights and experiences on digital detoxing, with a focus on work-life balance, mental health, and personal growth. Balancing Work, Family, and Digital Detox JPG Prince, the Community Project leader, touched on the challenges of balancing a work-from-home lifestyle with a family of five. He reflected on how being fully remote means constant digital presence, and how it’s difficult to separate personal time from work. "It's tough because everyone wants answers... You have to find that balance," JPG explained. He emphasized the importance of focusing on specific tasks rather than spreading oneself too thin, allowing for a healthier balance between digital life and personal fulfilment. Gork, from XRPL Awesome Possum, shared his personal experience of a week-long digital detox in the wilderness. Initially anxious about disconnecting from his routine of social media and games, he quickly realized the mental clarity it brought him. "You don’t really get the full experience when you’re always plugged in," Gork noted, highlighting the freedom that comes from stepping away and being present in nature. Mental Health and Digital Detox: A CBT Perspective Martin Yearley, a CBT therapist, provided a professional perspective, explaining how constant connectivity has blurred the lines between personal and work life. "Digital detoxes are now a staple in my routine," Martin shared, emphasizing how critical they are for avoiding burnout. He reflected on the mental exhaustion that comes from trying to balance work, family, and digital engagement without disconnecting periodically. He also shared research findings on how being present in the moment leads to greater happiness compared to mindlessly engaging with digital content. Intentional Use of Technology Tiara a community member’s contribution focused on the importance of intentional tech usage. She expressed that while she values technology, it’s essential to set boundaries. "For me, I can go without the digital stuff," Tiara stated. Her approach to social media revolves around creating a positive impact, choosing to share content that lifts others and enhances her real-life relationships. Throughout the session, the speakers agreed on one key point: Digital detoxes aren't about cutting out technology entirely but finding a healthier relationship with it. Whether it’s setting screen time limits, engaging in physical activities, or dedicating time to family without distractions, the balance is essential to avoid mental and digital overload. Addressing the Future of Digital Connectivity Looking ahead, one of the most critical challenges will be creating more structured approaches to digital engagement. The discussion acknowledged the need for platforms to introduce reminders and notifications that encourage users to take breaks. Duncan proposed that social media giants could introduce tools allowing users to set limits on their activity and even block notifications at certain times of the day. The aim is to design systems that empower users to take control over their digital habits. Additionally, with the rapid development of technology, especially the rise of the metaverse and immersive digital experiences, there will be new challenges in maintaining boundaries between the digital and the physical world. As Gork humorously remarked, "Can you imagine being fully immersed in the metaverse 24/7? We need to find balance before we lose ourselves in these new spaces." Finding Balance in a Digital World Digital detoxing is about intentional living. Whether you’re working remotely, connecting with loved ones, or leading a project, finding the time to disconnect is essential for long-term well-being. Our speakers' stories illustrate that it's not about completely abandoning technology, but rather understanding how to integrate it into a balanced lifestyle. As we move into a future dominated by ever-evolving technology, it’s vital to remember that we have the power to choose when and how we engage with it. Whether it’s going on a hike like Gork, limiting your screen time as Martin advises, or simply enjoying the present moment with loved ones, it’s time to prioritize our mental health.
